Masters of Phunk (2004)

about

Up to this point in time all my songs had been instrumentals or at least never had recorded vocal parts. This song marked the day I would record my very first vocal session and become known as a singer!

For the first time since myspace, Masters Of Phunk digitally remastered and restored to its former glory!

The music was written with friend and musical partner Benjamin Davies who also played the bass. The instruments were still recorded by plugging directly into the 2-track. In this case, via a super overdrive and envelope filter. The drums and horns were programmed using Guitar Pro.

The vocals were recording using a $20-30 microphone and a faulty lead. The vocals are divided into two characters. A narrator (the cookie monster voice) and the electronic/house artist (pitch shifted voice).

The story is powerful in essence, dealing with the daily struggle of a spreading plague of modern dance/club/hiphop music... and the need for more funk.

!!! SUPER FACTS:

Benjamin Davies went on to become a session musician and sound engineer and now owns the Illawarra's finest recording studio Silver Sound Studios.

I played in many bands with Benjamin over the next 4 years.

Even in a so called funk song I was unable to part with the dreaded double kick drumming I loved so much...

This was maybe the first song I wrote that used the standard structure of a pop or rock song.

lyrics

East side of the fairy land
the price goes it's full on demand
underneath the taco stand
the buttons are pushed but there is no band
Their fighting it off to try and keep it alive
but everyone turns to the hip hop jive
the world's gonna end but the only ones who can defend are...

We're the masters of funk!

With a guitar bass and drums you can go pretty far
but with the push of a button you can make them a star
maybe after a year you can buy a car.
I'll buy a city and a wife and that ain't too far
we'll over run the world with our pointless doof doof
make $$$$$
ah it's the masters of funk!
