Let The Guitar Do The Talking (2005)

about

I remember spending a Christmas (2004) down in South Australia. I spent a lot of time clocking up hours on my Learners license and listening to music. Back then I had a portable walk-man tape player I would take with me on these long psychedelic trips. I'd record a few of my cds onto tape and they'd be on a heavy repeat cycle until I got home.
During this particular trip I remember listening to 3 albums, Pink Floyd's Animals and The Dark Side of The Moon and a Jimi Hendrix best of cd. I didn't think much of the Hendrix cd and would have needed my sister's disc-man to play it. However I must have listened to it enough to still remember... After all these years of crazy touring and treating my body like a temple, my memory has become a little hazy. Fact and fiction converge along a thin line and my nails grow longer every day. On with the show!

Listening to so much music while being away from the studio, I'd start imagining all the songs I'd write when I'd get home while thinking of ways and production techniques to try and replicate sounds I was listening to or hearing in my head.

There are a few songs off the Driew album I can say were a direct result of this particular Pink Floyd soaked trip such as Midnight Desert Run and this track... Let The Guitar Do The Talking.

It certainly doesn't sound like Pink Floyd however I was inspired by both the guitar sounds of Animals and the talk box effect in Pigs. I created a home made talk box using a funnel, a long plastic tube and my very first amp, a small 30 watt solid state.

I wanted the entire vocal track to be recorded using the talk box with actual lyrics, not just sounds. The lyrics discuss super guitar powers, my unbelievable amount of skill and the need for certain people to shut up and just play.

"Shut your mouth your tongue is walking, let the guitar do the talking!"

It's probably the most solid track on the album, what ever that means...

SUPER FACTS!!!

In order to get a decent recording I had to cover the amp in a ton of blankets to try and increase the ratio of talk-box sound versus normal amp sound.

I say hi to my mum during the guitar solo.

The guitar tracks in this song sound better than most of the album due to me switching back to my revamped Cort strat copy.

Yes I was still using Guitar Pro for drum sounds...
